Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new top-of-the-range Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy SIII, updating the most direct rival to Apple's iPhone with a larger touch screen and more powerful processor.

Analysts said the new device represented a formidable challenge to rivals, given a combination of the Galaxy brand, sales support from operators and heavy marketing.

The South Korean technology group, which overtook Finnish company Nokia as the world's biggest cellphone maker earlier this year, said the new Galaxy SIII model would go on sale in some markets in late May and around the world from June.

Analysts said the expected massive marketing campaign and features of the handset - billed as the official smartphone of the London 2012 Olympics - were likely enough to generate strong sales.

"Samsung must make the most of a 4-5 month window of opportunity with the Galaxy SIII before
Apple changes the game once more with its next generation iPhone," said Geoff Blaber, analyst at CCS Insight.

Samsung
's meteoric rise - in the first quarter of 2011 it shipped fewer smartphones than Apple, Nokia or Research in Motion, but is now market leader - has handed it a dilemma.

Does it risk becoming a commodity manufacturer of hardware, squeezed like the PC makers of old between narrowing margins and those who control the software that makes their devices run, or does it try to break into other parts of the business - the so-called mobile ecosystem?

The Galaxy SIII, meanwhile, comes with Google's
Android 4.0 OS.

Analysts have dubbed the smartphone rivalry a 'two-horse' race, i.e. between Samsung and Apple.

Processor:

Upgraded hardware like the A5 dual core processor and dual core graphics delivers better performance for gaming and camera use in the iPhone 4S. The
A5 processor also offers better battery management, so battery life is improved further.

The A5 processor - the brain in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 - is now made in a sprawling 1.6 million square feet factory in Austin owned by Samsung.

The powerful A5 processor, which uses technology licensed from Britain's
ARM Holdings, is designed by Apple in California.

The A5 chip debuted in Apple's iPad 2. The 120 square millimeter chip is twice as fast as its predecessor, the A4, which is also made by Samsung, according to reports from teardown firms that have taken Apple's devices apart.

Samsung Electronics said it would mass-produce its faster, energy-saving quad-core mobile microprocessor to power the third generation of its Galaxy SIII smartphone.

The Exynos 4 Quad, based on British chip designer ARM Holdings' Cortex A9 technology, enables more tasks in a shorter period of time, for example, a task such as streaming video can run on one core while the other cores update applications in the background, connecting to the web and scanning virus-check simultaneously.

Operating System

The pre-loaded iOS5 offers 200 new features including an all-new notification center, Twitter integration, reminders, iMessage , wireless sync, iCloud services and improvements in device performance.

Apple says that from built-in apps to over 500,000 apps available from the App Store, iOS is the "foundation" of iPhone. With thousands of apps in practically every category, iOS is the platform for the world's largest collection of mobile apps.

Samsung Electronics is the world's largest smartphone manufacturer and biggest user of Google's Android operating system.

Samsung Galaxy S-III runs on the latest Android operating System 4.0 or the Ice Cream Sandwich.
According to the Android website, Android 4.0 makes common actions more visible and lets you navigate with simple, intuitive gestures. Refined animations and feedback throughout the system make interactions engaging and interesting.

An entirely new typeface optimized for high-resolution screens improves readability and brings a polished, modern feel to the user interface.

Camera

LONDON: Samsung recently overtook Nokia as the number one smartphone maker in the world (unit sales). But there seem to be no signs as slowing down - they just announced an all-new flagship Galaxy smartphone - Galaxy SIII.
The Galaxy series of smartphones is primarily responsible for Samsung's astronomical growth in the smartphone space. Designed to take the fight to the new crop of quad core superphones, the Galaxy SIII features a quad core processor, the latest Android 4.0, 4.8-inch HD Super Amoled screen, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080 p video recording and 1.9 megapixel front camera.
The previous flagship, Galaxy SII, has a 4.3-inch screen. The SIII, with 4.8-inch screen, is not much larger or heavier because of the narrower bezel and innovative weight reduction technologies. It is an unbelievable 8.6 mm thick and weighs just 133 grams. The more rounded shape and premium finish (in pebble blue or marble white) is inspired by nature.
This time, it's also more about just the hardware specifications. There are several smartphone firsts in the Galaxy SIII. For instance, Smart Stay, which keeps the phone screen on as long as you are looking at it; Direct Call - raise the phone to your ear and it instantly starts calling the contact you were looking at or messaging; and Pop up Play, which can keep HD video playing on the screen while you do other tasks Another first is the built-in wireless charging system. With an optional accessory called the wireless charging kit, the Galaxy SIII can be charged by just placing it on the charger instead of connecting a cable.
The camera also sees notable improvements. While the resolution stays the same 8 megapixels as some previous models, the SIII has a back illuminated sensor (for better low light images), zero shutter lag, burst mode (3.3 frames per second up to 20 frames) and a best shot feature which takes eight photographs in quick succession and automatically chooses the best one. Both the front and rear cameras are capable of recording HD video.
Other features include S Voice - a natural language voice recognition system which works with eight languages, face recognition, cloud services, NFC and Wi-Fi direct. A range of accessories (flip cover, cases, docking stations for the desk and car, a dongle to share video wirelessly to TV screens and a specially designed companion MP3 player) will also be launched alongside the device.
